Why does brand reputation matter so much?

Extensive research has shown that brands with strong reputations are more effective at attracting a larger pool of qualified job applicants. These companies often receive more favourable media coverage, which enhances their public image and boosts consumer trust. Additionally, customers are willing to pay higher prices for brands they perceive as trustworthy and reliable. Once a company establishes trust with its customers, brand loyalty typically follows. This loyalty creates a significant barrier for competing brands, making it more difficult for them to lure away these loyal customers. Furthermore, reputable brands tend to have lower costs for goods and services since a strong reputation can lead to better negotiations and relationships with suppliers.

What is the difference between marketing to consumers and marketing to businesses?

There are significant differences in marketing to different target audiences. Businesses typically operate under constraints such as tight timelines, longer sales cycles, strict budgets, and complex approval processes, requiring them to make purchasing decisions based on their specific needs. Products or services marketed to businesses are often high-value and focus on delivering substantial efficiency, so the messaging tends to emphasize facts and return on investment (ROI). Brand awareness often starts with an online search and leads to lead generation via a phone call, email, or website form. That's why it's so important to have a digital brand presence.

In contrast, consumers face fewer limitations. Their decisions are often driven by personal choice, allowing for more impulsive behavior, as they only need to consider their individual preferences. As a result, marketing messages directed at consumers are usually designed to appeal to their emotions.

Does the timing of marketing campaigns matter?

Timing is crucial for effective marketing. For example, if you run a deck-building business, it's essential to begin your marketing efforts a few months before summer when customers are excited to enjoy their newly constructed decks. Similarly, if you sell celebration desserts, you should launch your campaigns a few weeks before major events like Christmas, Easter, graduations, and Thanksgiving. If you're selling Make-Up services, the ideal time is a few weeks before the Christmas season and starting a few months during the peak wedding season. To ensure your messaging is relevant and memorable, pay close attention to the timing of your promotions. If you're selling AI or robotics to businesses that previously have no exposure to such topics, consider starting your campaigns half a year before budgets are set to help nurture the concept during a complex sales cycle.

Is email marketing still relevant today?

Email marketing is still a promising marketing tool. To use it effectively, it's important to implement best practices. This includes obtaining consent for email marketing, keeping your data organized and up to date in a relevant CRM, ensuring your messaging and creative content aligns with audience segmentation, and focusing your creative on one clear call to action.

One key point I always emphasize is the importance of establishing an email marketing schedule that respects your customers' time. Spamming individuals with frequent emails is a guaranteed way to be marked as "spam" or get "blacklisted."

Is social media marketing right for everyone?

Yes and no. Every business can benefit from social media marketing, but the choice of platform is very important. Each platform has different user demographics, resulting in distinct audience profiles. For example, TikTok's user base is primarily under 30, making it less suitable for B2B marketing and more ideal for B2C and DTC marketing, especially with features like TikTok Shop. Additionally, the messaging style varies by platform. A marketer might use more polished language on LinkedIn, but that same messaging may not resonate with users on Instagram or TikTok.

How important is a detailed keyword strategy in search or PPC marketing?

I've come across many consultants who claim they can increase web traffic with a strong keyword strategy. However, effective keyword planning requires a deep understanding of your business, products, competitors, and sales process.

For instance, a bakery I reviewed used "cookies" as a keyword for their PPC campaign without regional targeting. While this popular keyword seemed promising, it led to unqualified clicks from people looking for cookie recipes or from those outside their area, instead of attracting local customers.
